Electrotherapies at East Midlands Clinical Canine Massage & Therapies

At East Midlands Clinical Canine Massage & Therapies, I can offer a range of electrotherapies which will be discussed as part of your dog’s treatment plan at their assessment.

Electrotherapy has can have many applications and used for a wide range of clinical conditions such as osteoarthritis, soft tissue injuries, wound healing, neurological conditions, pain control or relief, reduction of inflammation, muscle re-education, reversal of atrophy and muscle strengthening.

Electrotherapies used include:

Laser Therapy

Laser Therapy, commonly known as Photobiomodulation Therapy, Cold Laser, or Low Level Laser Therapy, utilises therapeutic light to promote positive cellular changes in patients. This innovative treatment involves the emission of light beams at specific wavelengths, allowing for deep tissue penetration. As the body absorbs this light, it stimulates beneficial cellular responses that enhance healing and overall well-being.

May be used for:

  • Wound repair

  • Pain relief

  • Scar tissue

  • Soft tissue injuries

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Haematomas

  • Antibacterial effect on skin conditions and dirty wounds

Effects of Laser Therapy can include:

  • Alleviation of Inflammation & Pain

  • Acceleration of metabolism and the healing process

  • Tissue Regeneration

Conditions which can benefit from Laser Therapy include:

  • Arthritis

  • Back/Joint Pain

  • Musculoskeletal Injuries including tendon & ligament injuries

  • Degenerative Myelopathy

  • Cruciate Injury/Disease alongside surgery or conservative management

How quickly can results be seen?

You may see relief after the first treatment or so as pain and inflammation are reduced. For example: better mobility for joint conditions, drying and healing of dermatological issues, faster healing for wounds and incisions, or your pet just seeming more relaxed and comfortable. For some conditions, a series of treatments may be necessary before you see results due to the severity or complexity of the condition. Each dog is different, and treatments are unique for your pet’s specific needs.

TENS

Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation
(NMES)

NMES  effectively sends electrical impulses to activate muscles, prompting them to contract and relax as they would naturally. This innovative process aids in muscle re-education, helping the muscles learn to function again. I frequently utilise NMES in practice to assist dogs with spinal injuries who are unable to walk unassisted

Transcutaneous Nerve Stimulation
(TENS)

TENS therapy is an effective solution for managing chronic pain in dogs, particularly for those suffering from joint issues like osteoarthritis or muscular discomfort, especially in the back. By utilising the pain gate theory, TENS helps modulate pain signals, providing much-needed relief. This therapy is an excellent addition to a comprehensive pain management routine for dogs recovering from surgery.

Pulse Electromagnetic Field Therapy
(PEMF)

Pulse electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy is a safe and non-invasive treatment that utilises low electromagnetic waves to aid in healing and alleviate pain in dogs.

This therapy effectively reduces inflammation in both acute and chronic conditions promoting a quicker recovery. By enhancing circulation, it boosts blood flow, delivering essential oxygen and nutrients to tissues, which helps minimise discomfort.
